The Fern Unit
Thursday, 12 July 2007 13:41

The Fern Unit, located beside I T U, is the admission lounge for Barnet Hospital's elective surgical patients, which is run by the theatre recovery' staff.

Due to the same day admissions policy in Barnet the throughput has increased and looking after patient's medical notes had become rather a problem.

The Friends were asked to fund a mobile patient’s notes trolley similar to those used on the wards. An extra requirement was that the unit was lockable. A suitable item was purchased at a cost of £462.00.

Treasure Island Ward
Thursday, 12 July 2007 13:40

Carol Gardner of Treasure Island asked for two trolleys to move oxygen cylinders to the patient's bedside when required. Two trolleys were purchased at a cost of £300.00,

Another inquiry was whether the Friends were able to purchase a wheelchair with a reclining back. The need for this type of wheelchair arises when children have hip spikers applied for congenital dislocation of the hips. Plaster of Paris is applied to the lower abdomen and legs to ensure the hips are rotated outward, which means the child won't fit in a normal chair, being unable to sit up and also wider than normal due to the plaster cast. Normally the parents have to hire a wheelchair from the Red Cross which rarely has a reclining back. The nurses then have to pack the child into the chair so that they can be taken home. The Friends were happy to purchase a wheelchair at a cost of £772.80. It was felt that the folder holders on the patients beds were in a very poor state and the Friends arranged funding for twenty holders at a cost of £401.85

£14500 For Cardiology Dept.
Thursday, 12 July 2007 13:36

The Cardiology Department at Barnet are in need of additional ambulatory recorders.

These recorders are used for cardiac patients to record both their heart rate/ rhythm and blood pressure over 24 hours. Patients generally take these recorders home one day and return them the following day. The results from these recorders enable the consultant to diagnose the patient's condition without them having to stay in hospital overnight.

24 Hour ECG recorders cost £ 1,712.00 each and five were required. 24 hour blood pressure recorders cost £1,495.00 each and four were required.

The total cost was £14,540.00 which the Friends were happy to fund.
